The brief.
Konstruct was engaged to replace structural steel cover plates inside a coal bunker at a Queensland facility. The cover plates shield the bunker's structural steel from the coal that passes over it, protecting those load-bearing elements from the wear that constant coal contact would otherwise cause. Replacing the worn plates required the tripper unit to be shut down and the bunker isolated so the crew could work safely inside.
The challenge.
The work was demanding in its own right, carried out inside an isolated coal bunker with the access constraints that environment brings. The greater challenge was the schedule. The job was initially planned across nine days, but with the tripper offline holding up production, Konstruct was asked whether it could be completed faster, in four days, so the unit could return to service and production could resume. The condition was firm: the timeline could be compressed, but not at the expense of safety.
How we delivered.
Konstruct met the compressed program by planning the work for speed without cutting corners on safety. The crew was increased in size and moved to longer twelve-hour shifts to maintain continuous progress across the shortened window. The rope access setup was streamlined, and rigging was prepared ahead of the crews working in the pit, so that each team could move straight into productive work and downtime between stages was kept to a minimum. That forward planning and coordination allowed the plate replacement to proceed at pace while the isolation and safety controls held throughout.
The outcome.
Konstruct completed the cover plate replacement on the fourth day, less than half the original nine-day estimate. The tripper unit was returned to service and production resumed ahead of schedule, recovering days of lost output for the operator. The job demonstrates Konstruct's ability to deliver technical shutdown works in a demanding industrial environment, and to compress a program under pressure without compromising the safety controls that protect the crew and the plant.
